初級拉丁文一

一、課程說明

在各個學科裡我們常常會碰到拉丁文,舉凡哲學、歷史、法律、醫學、生物學、英美文學等。這門課旨在協助同學們建立古典時期拉丁文(Classical Latin)的基礎文法與初步閱讀能力,尤其將研讀多篇改編自羅馬哲學家西塞羅(Cicero)的著作(adapted texts)。歡迎各個領域的同學們來選修!

二、指定用書

Wheelock’s Latin. F. Wheelock. Collins, 2011. 7th edition. 課堂中將提供節選講義,同學們無需購買課本。

三、課程大綱

Week 1       Introduction. Chapter 1. Verbs. First and second conjugations: present infinitive, indicative, imperative active.
Reading “The Poet Horace Contemplates an Invitation” (Horace).
Week 2       Chapter 2. Nouns and cases; first declension; agreement of adjectives; syntax.
Reading “Catullus Bids His Girlfriend Farewell” (Catullus).
Week 3       Chapter 3. Second declension: masculine nouns and adjectives; apposition; word order.
                   Reading “The Grass Is Always Greener” (Horace).
Week 4       Chapter 4. Second declension neuters; adjectives; indicative of sum; predicate nouns and adjectives; substantive adjectives.
                   Reading “The Parity of Friendship” (Cicero).
Week 5       Chapter 5. First and second conjugations: future and imperfect; adjectives in -er.
                   Reading “Thermopylae: a Soldier’s Humor” (Cicero).
Week 6       Chapter 6. Sum: future and imperfect indicative; possum: present, future, and imperfect indicative; complementary infinitive.
                   Reading “The Historian Livy Laments the Decline of Roman Morals” (Livy).
Week 7       Chapter 7. Third declension nouns.
                   Reading “Catallus Dedicates His Poetry Book” (Catullus).
Week 8       Chapter 8. Third conjugation: present infinitive, present, future, and imperfect indicative, imperative.
                   Reading “Cicero on the Ethics of Waging War” (Cicero).

Week 9       Midterm exam.

Week 10     Chapter 9. Demonstrative hic, ille, iste; special -ius adjectives.
                   Reading TBA.
Week 11     Chapter 10. Fourth conjugation and -io verbs of the third.
                   Reading “The Incomparable Value of Friendship” (Cicero).
Week 12     Chapter 11. Personal pronouns ego, tu, and is; demonstratives is and idem.
                   Reading “Cicero Denounces Catiline in the Senate” (Cicero).
Week 13     Chapter 12. Perfect active system of all verbs.
                   Reading “Pliny Writes to Marcellinus about the Death of Fundanus’ Daughter” (Pliny)
Week 14     Chapter 13. Reflexive pronouns and possessives; intensive pronoun.
                   Reading “Alexander the Great and the Power of Literature” (Cicero).
Week 15     Chapter 14. I-stem nouns of the third declension; ablatives of means, accompaniment, and manner.
                   Reading “Cicero Imagines the State of Rome Itself Urging Him to Punish the Catilinarian conspirators” (Cicero).
Week 16     Chapter 15. Numerals; genitive of the whole; genitive and ablative with cardinal numerals; ablative of time.
Reading “Cyrus’ Dying Words on Immortality” (Cicero).
Week 17     Chapter 16. Third declension adjectives.
                   Reading “Juvenal Explains His Impulse to Satire” (Juvenal).

Week 18     Final exam.

四、成績考核

1.     每週家庭作業,拉丁文翻譯為英文,16次成績選15次,佔30%。同學需於課前充分準備好每週指定翻譯範圍,課堂上輪流翻譯。
2.     每週隨堂測驗,16次成績選15次,佔30%
3.     期中考與期末考各佔20%
4.     表現優異的同學可獲得額外Bonus Points 10%
